Abstract

In light of the ongoing reforms to social work education in England under the Social Work Reform Board, it seemed a timely opportunity to explore the evidence base underpinning the effectiveness of post-qualifying learning for social workers. In particular, the authors wanted to explore whether there is a relationship between the level and type of post-qualifying education undertaken by social workers, and the quality of service delivery. An exploratory literature review was undertaken, which indicated that there is a dearth of evidence in relation to this topic. The literature review suggested that there are some positive effects, and these may be felt at the level of outcomes for people who use services and carers. However, this has not been consistently demonstrated at the level of the social work workforce as a whole. The conclusion is that primary research is required to provide further evidence.
