A systematic approach such as the Advanced Life Support guidelines including a full ‘ABCDE’ was needed [1]. A review of 864 urological consultations found that 6% were due to urethral catheterisation complications [2]. Approximately 3.2 per 1,000 cases produce an iatrogenic urethral injury [3]. It is essential that the majority of the catheter cannot be seen from the urethral meatus.
When performing an ABCDE approach, full appropriate assessment of E is required to avoid delay in management.
When examining a catheter focus on how much of the catheter can be seen from the urethral meatus.
Urine in the catheter bag does not mean the catheter is actively draining.
